Natural Sweeteners

Sugar and Spice and everything nice…that’s how the nursery rhyme goes, right?

Mother Goose didn’t mention anything about Saccharin and Aspartame and everything lame, because those are Artificial Sweeteners. And Artificial Sweeteners have no place in nursery rhymes or on the Earth Fare shelves.

What are Natural Sweeteners?
Nature produces way more than sugar and spice – there are plenty of Natural Sweeteners to choose from, which means there’s no reason anyone should resort to those dirty little pastel packets ever again.

Some are common: honey, sugar, maple syrup and molasses are fairly well known Natural Sweeteners.  But stop at those well-known sweeteners and you’ll only be scratching the surface!

Evaporated fruit juice can be used to sweeten baked goods and natural fruit juices to sweeten drinks.

Dates that have been dehydrated and ground up make for delicious sugary topping, and you can substitute date sugar for processed white sugar in any recipe.

Sorghum is a sweetener similar in taste to molasses, and can be substituted for corn syrup in most recipes.

Stevia is a popular herb that is sweeter than sugar, and can be substituted for the little colorful packets used for sweetening your tea and coffee.

Agave Nectar is a popular sweetener that has come under fire for undergoing more processing and being high in fructose (a natural sugar compound).  But it is often seen as a vegan substitute for honey and a sugar substitute for some diabetics since it has a lower Glycemic Index.

So we can eat all the Natural Sweeteners we want?
We provide plenty of options and alternatives to artificial sweeteners, but the bottom line is that too much of any sweet treat is unhealthy. Just because a cake is organic and naturally sweetened does not make it healthy.

The natural cake is, however, less likely to cause headaches and ADHD symptoms than an artificially sweetened cake – and we think that’s a pretty sweet advantage.
